Sutter's Fort is located in the heart of Midtown Sacramento's Sutter District. Established in 1839, the site of the fort was originally called New Helvetia (New Switzerland) by its builder John Sutter. From 1839 to 1849, Sutter's Fort was the economic center of the first permanent European colonial settlement in California's Central Valley. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park comprises a 19th-century fort that played a key role in the gold rush and the development of Sacramento. Within the fort walls were sleeping quarters, a gunsmith, distillery, bakery, grist mill, blanket factory, and carpenter and blacksmith shops. The exhibits present inside the Fort tell the stories of the fort and its surroundings through narrative boards, photographs and videos. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park was added to National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on 15 October 1966. Sutter's Fort is a fun historical location to visit and spend time with family.
